In the passage, the manager of WWAC thinks his company should remodel its radio format. While the population of this area has grown, the amount of people listening radios has declined. What's more, he argues that they should make listeners of the new residents by changing the form to a news and talking format, because these two forms of radio are increasingly popular. The argument above seems logical at the first glance. However, when analyzing it in details, there are many flaws in it.
Firstly, the manager believes that the decline of people listening rock music shows that they should change their format of radio. This change may not work. Though the listeners of music have declined, this phenomenon may not last forever. In another word, this decline may come to an end in a short time. And this decline may due to that people in this area are faced with long-time works and have not enough time to listen to music, but not because people in the area are not fond of music. What' more, if the company put the music in a wrong time, such as in the mid-night, people would rather go to bed than listen to music. So the company should keep patient, do more researches among listeners, and make some changes later.
What's more, the manager argues that a continuing decline in sales of recorded music shows people's limited interest in music. This may not be logical, either. If records in this area are too expensive for people to purchase, people may be not willing to by records. Also, if there is no enjoyable record at present, people would not buy these records. So the decline in sales of recorded music can not reflect that people are not fond of music. They could enjoy music on the internet, or by cell-phones.
Furthermore, the manager thinks that a news and talking format is increasingly popular in the area, so they should change music to news. However, not all the people are fond of news. Among old people, they may spend more time on news or talking shows, but this format may not be popular among children and adults. Especially among children, they might like pop music more than news. Furthermore, in general, the population of young people is larger than that of old people, and a company should cater to all of them. So if the company changes music radio to news, it may lose a lot of listeners.
So from the reasons issued above, I think that the arguments issued by the manager are not logical enough. The manager should attend more evidence to prove that music should be supplanted by news. So if the company wants to appeal more listeners, managers should do more researches in detail, and choose a best format of radio in the further. |
