Issue 75 题目: In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for a society to regard any living man or woman as a hero.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. ======================================================================================== 字数: 505 ======================================================================================== Are there heroes existing in the current society? The speaker says that heroes are no longer possible standing out because of the intensive media coverage. However, I don't agree with the speaker. From my point of view, although there is no specific and unanimous definition of heroes, I think heroes are those who can lead the mass with their spirits or actions. In this assumption, media may be a part of the world which can contribute to people's adoration of a hero. And heroes are also needed in a society. Heroes, as I define, are the spiritual leaders who will influence our life or inspire us when we are in dilemmas. Everyone can be a hero in a specific person's heart, and therefore, if a group of people who share the same hero can build a society. From one perspective, societies are those most of the people there share a list of values and perceptions, and heroes are sometimes one part of their values. In the current world, Vatican is almost the only country who has a pope, and in this society, pope is the only person who is adored and is regarded as a deity. The example of Vatican is so persuasive, although the mass media is updating, religions can lead to people's regarding one person as a hero in their heart.
Media can do anything including propaganda and it will influence people's thinking patterns in one society. Some people will argue that the media make the world so translucent and both good and bad things happened to a person can be known to everyone, and as a consequence, heroes are less likely to be admitted by the mass. Admittedly, media can make a fact known to the world, but it can also hold back the facts. These will happen when the media are controlled by the political leaders or are treated with lots of material spurs like money. By these means, the mass of a society may be blinded to the fact and regard one person like the leader as their hero.
Turning next to the discussion of the societies in the current world, we also have to say that true heroes exist in societies. For instance, many people in Tibet, which is one part of China, are the disciples of Dalai Lama. In the small coterie of these people, Dalai Lama is regarded as their hero in their heart, and those people even can sacrifice their lives to follow Dalai's commands. It is the society that a group of people are in that makes whether a hero exists. Furthermore, the example of Vatican as I referred above can also contribute to my perspective.
To sum up, although intensive media covers the whole world, heroes are exists in the current world. They are heroes existing in some societies or coteries who share the same value or religion. And media sometimes make fewer tendencies of people to accept their deities in the true life and in other circumstances, things happen in the different way. |
