The lecturer casts doubt on the passage and points out that altruism is sometimes also good to the performers. He gives contradictory explantions to the two specific examples in the reading passage. To begin with, the lecturer refers to a close obeservation report of meerkats, and conlcude that the behaviors of sentinels described in the passage is wrong. The sentinel meercats usually eat before they stand guard. So when the other meerkats are seeking for food, the sentinels are with full stomach. Besides, according to the lecture, the sentinels do not take more risks than the meerkats which are hunt for food. Actually, those meerkats hunting for food face more dangers from the predators. Secondly, the lecturer clarifies that the sentinels are not take more risks to make the alarm when the predators are approaching.Because when the sentinels make alarm, all the meerkats in the group will either get together or dispersed. So that it will distract the predator's attention to the callers. While the passage demenstrates that the sentinels will face more dangers when making alarms. Finally, the lecturer offer a different explanation for humans' alturism behaviors such as donation. He points that when donating money to strangers, the donors actually gain something including the good reputation in the society. Meanwhile, they will realize their self-worth and get other valuable things. This point is totally contradictory with the passage's view that these behaviors will provide little reward to the one performing the act. |
