Now, more and more people choose to attend college or university. Every one has its own reason. I think there are three major reasons. Foremost, people attend college to learn more. Therefore what they learn at that time is very basic. Take mathematics for example. Instructors only teach solving simple equations, doing simple calculation and simple theory. If it is necessary to teach a theorem that beyond students’ understanding, they just mention it without proof, saying,” Just put it down and do not care why.” After graduating with deficient knowledge, students who need further study enter the colleges where not only the knowledge taught in middle school will be divided into more specialized categories and given in a more systematic way, but also a lot of new knowledge will be imparted. Besides, the resources in college are abundant. Students can get any materials they need. So no place is more suitable for people to gain comprehensive knowledge than colleges. The second reason is to gain new experience. First, college is a place to improve the social ability. One will meet people from different places with different accent, different culture and different habits. It is a good opportunity to learn how to live in harmony with them. Second, you can attend student union or leagues where the leadership will be well trained. In a word, college is a miniature of the society, offering the knowledge and skills you would never learn from class. The last reason, which may be the most prevalent one, is to get a college diploma in order to apply for a job. In job seeking market, college-diploma holders are more likely to get jobs. The directors of most companies hold the attitude that diploma is equal to capability, although owning a diploma does not mean having the commensurate ability. In my country, there is a popular saying, “Diploma helps you get a job while the ability helps you keep the job.” It reflects the importance of diplomas.
