How is your generation different from your parents' generation?
The most different between our generation and our parents’ generation, I believe, is that we are more exposed to the science and technology, such as open Internet and a variety of high-tech gadgets. And therefore we live longer, better, we work and study more efficiently, and we are more caring and responsible.
A wide assortment of high-tech products have spiced up our daily life. First, it is instant messaging during office hours give us the thrill of passing notes in class, then it is ogling ourselves before Web cams, ranting our minds on blogs, uploading our baby photos on Flickr and poking each other on Face book. Compared to our colorful life, parents’ generation seems to live a more simple, routine but dull life.It is beyond their imagination that we can make friends thousands miles away and chats with them so easily. Moreover, we are living in a world far safer in many ways than it has ever been.Life expectancy is up, infant mortality is down, diseases that were recently mass killer have all but eradicated. Advance in public health, medicine and medical therapy, food safety and work protection have dramatically reduced the major risks our parents faced just a decade ago.
Furthermore, our study and work are becoming more effective and efficient. As a student, you can get teachers help about tutoring, home work and other school matters after school time; as an employee or employer, you can get the accomplishment by finishing the same workload in half or less time, money. It is impossible for our parents’ generation take a meeting with people in different districts at the same time; they have to spend much time and money to travel when a meeting is held on another city. Nowadays, with the help of telecommuting it is just a piece of cake for us.
There is no denying that the industrial and information ages have spawned a whole range of risks, such as genetically modified food, Nuclear power, Artificial sweetener, air and water pollution and the like, and thus raised awareness of those that were lurking all the time. So we are more tending to take it upon ourselves to be a watchdog, participating in legislating a variety of government’s regulations; we are more caring and responsible, extending our concerns beyond ourselves to others.
To put in a shell, we are living a brand new world, getting new benefits and facing new challenges. But the majority of our generation still shares the same beliefs and values with our parents, our ancestors, just like Barack Obama said: honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism, those things are old, those things are true.
