http://www.ckgsb.com/web2005/news-2245.html What Kind of MBA Students are We Looking for? | May 31st, 2007 | "Reasonably smart (analytical skill), witty (effective logical thinking under great pressure) and continuous learning ability are the three important criteria in evaluating MBA students during the recruiting process."Said Mr. Mathew Chang, a principal associate at McKinsey & Co. in his presentation to CKGSB MBAs on May 18th, 2007.
According to him, as McKinsey consultants are expected to solve real business world problems for their clients, they have to possess exceptional ability in first identifying and analyzing the problem, then creating and effectively presenting the solution for smart people (senior level management of the client companies). Since all the consultants rotate into different environments, companies, industries and regions, "being witty"is a big must. Work efficiency should not be interrupted by unfamiliarity with any specific environment as this will usually cause psychological pressure, and thus have a negative effect on productivity. "We are a practical problem solving institution, not academic institution" emphasized Chang. Some analysts who are skilled at identifying and producing solutions are rejected for not being witty enough.
Having enjoyed steady growth for the past decade, McKinsey & Co. (China), is currently diversifying its local business: Chinese SOE and private companies now account for more than 35% of its customers. And the non-strategy divisions, such as finance, operation etc contribute 53% of the whole business. "That's one side of our localization strategy."Chang said.
"The other side is recruiting more local MBA graduates." The competition for positions at McKinsey is still tough: last year, only 20 received job offers, out of 12,000 applicants from the top four universities in China. McKinsey HR is paying much more attention to the MBAs from Chinese B-schools than in the past because of the excellent performance of the recently recruited local MBAs.
Finally, Mr. Chang said, to avoid missing any talent in CKGSB, McKinsey will organize case interview workshop here this year. |
