A recent sales study indicates that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent during the past five years. Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants whose specialty is seafood. Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about healthful eating. Therefore, the new Captain Seafood restaurant that specializes in seafood should be quite popular and profitable.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

======================================================================

While it might be true that new Captain Seafood  restaurant should be quite popular in Bay City, the author of this argument doesn't make a cogent inference to validate it. This argument is rife with holes and weak assumptions. Thus, readers can come up with many questions that will weaken or even topple this argument.

First of all, the author suggests that the seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percents during the past five years, which infers that the seafood markets has a very riveting future. But this assertion is based on the assumption that 30 percents is a tremendous increase and now the scale of seafood market in Bay City nowadays is considerable large. However, some critical information has not been provided by the author, such as the initial scale of the seafood market and other food's sale situation in Bay City, which are important for us to evaluate the author's argument. Maybe five years age there were not too many people like seafood in this city, so after quick increase of five years, this market is still very small. By the way, maybe other food's sale in Bay is much better than seafood, so it is not wise enough to invest on seafood there.

Besides, the author tells us that there are no currently operating city restaurants whose specialty is seafood in Bay City, which shows us a good opportunity of business of seafood. But there are a lot of factors other than the competitors which can influence the market. For example, the weather in Bay City may be very hot, thus the quality assurance period for seafood is much shorter than in other cities. So the cost of restaurants to keep their food fresh is extremely high. Duo to this reason, it is not applicable to have seafood restaurants in this city.

Furthermore, the author shows that the majority of families in this city are two-income families which have few home-cooked meals and they are always favor of healthy food. The author try to connect this fact with popular of seafood restaurants in this city, but some assumption is not rational enough. On one hand, it is highly possible that most of families in Bay City don't like seafood at all, so even though they often have meal in restaurants, they will not choose sea food. On the other hand, seafood with a lot of fat will not be considered as healthy food according to the two-income families' judgment. So the sale situation of seafood in this city is not optimistic in the future.

In conclusion, while it might be true that new Captain Seafood  restaurant should be quite popular in Bay City, some important evidence and analysis are needed to make a more persuasive argument. Unless more relevant information is provided, I can not agree with the author's position.

第二个理由,题目中说到海鲜消耗量在本城还是增长的。
