To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
When we try to understand the most important characteristics of a society, we usually tend to study its major cities. However, studying major cities is not the only way to comprehend a society. Firstly, we admit that a major city can reflect the face of a society, to some extent. Like major flowers in a gardon can represent the characteristics of it. Major cities own most resources and considerable population, so there is no doubt when people talk about a society, its major cities come into mind. We talk about China, a large society and in fact most of us are talking about its major cities, like Shanghai or Beijing. Shanghai has its advanced metro transportation system, large amounts of viaducts and talents from everywhere. All of these are telling us that Chinese society is seeking to increase its degree of modernization and its strength. With the viaducts and metros, the society has a characteristics of fast-paced life. But, problem comes that whether Shanghai can reflect the whole face of Chinese society. Or we ask it in another way: can major cities represent the true characteristics of a society? Wherever we are, we cannot deny there is the poor, famines, and crimes happened everyday. Once we take in consideration such terrible problems existing in our society, only studying major cities is not an effective way. You try to understand a gardon and you look at its major beautiful flowers, then you say “Wow, it’s a lovely gardon!” That is ridiculous, isn’t that? So major cities reflect only parts of the face of a society. Flourishing and modernization is not everything. Shift our attentions to second-tier cities and villages for we can see lives behind flourishing. We see many migrant works standing in queue overnight, just to get a ticket so they can return home during the Spring Festival. Many young couples cannot afford buying a house on their own, and they need to get help from their old parents - Chinese housing prices are too high. Situations mentioned above are also characteristics of Chinese society. In contrast to major cities like Shanghai, the main characteristics is lacking of efficiency and housing markets out of control. For these reasons, studying major cities is not a strong support to understand a society absolutely. Flourishing is not the true face. It is migrant workers and ordinary people that represent the face, and also characteristics. |
