Who am I?
Why MBA?
http://forums.businessweek.com/discussions/BW_Business_Schools/Business_Schools__PartTime_MBA_Programs/UCLA_Anderson_FEMBA_is_it_worth_it/bw-bschools/87362.1?redirCnt=1&nav=messages
************** Hi, I just got admitted in R2 to UCLA's FEMBA program starting in 2011. One half of me is very excited about the program but the other half is a little confused and nervous. After I got the admit, I started thinking about whether a FEMBA from UCLA is really worth it. I'll start with a little background about myself - - I am software engineer and have been working in my current role for the past 8 years in the same company. I have led some exciting projects in the past but lately I started realizing that I was getting bored at my job. Secondly, I was bumping my head against the ceiling because there wasn't much I or my managers could do with the flat organizational structure we have in the company I work for. Lastly, I have always been fascinated with what happens in the business world - how you develop and make strategic decisions, foster innovation and remain ahead in this ever changing world of technology. Why I am excited about the UCLA FEMBA program - - I believe UCLA has the right facilities and environment to give me a good business education. Also, I feel that the course curriculum at UCLA with equip me with the requisite business management skills to not only progress in my career but also show wider horizons - way beyond then what I can see from my office window. Lastly, I "think" that UCLA has a great network. I am hoping that is something true and helps in job searching later. Why I am nervous about the part-time program - - I am 35 years old and have been working with the same company for the past 8 years. So, in a way I am a little rusty and am on the higher end of the average age of the FEMBA class. Secondly, I am worried about the finances - spending 100K at this stage in my life seems a little risky. Thirdly, after speaking to a few FEMBA's (past and present) and doing my own research I am still not a 100% convinced that the program is going to do wonders. There are no salary or progression stats about FEMBA - this is a gray area depending on an individual's situation but still I am not getting the positive vibe. If I start the program, I will "obviously" give it my 200%. I am inclined towards pursuing a career in "Technology Strategy" and "International Business". I am planning to stick to the west coast (I love it out here). This may change but that's what I think right now. But I still have the following BIG question in my mind - Is pursuing a 100K FEMBA at Anderson worth it? Would this be a good investment at this stage in my life and career? Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
