710 is CBS average and 3.6 > average so those fields are not a problem. I am actually curious about what you consider as "top 5 consulting company." Usually people mention "top 3." What are the 4th and 5th?
Put down all your activities you can think of. I don't think CBS cares about that as much as some schools (HBS, Stanford, etc)
I suggest you get Columbia's application out before the 1st round ED deadline and have 2 back ups for round 2 (Maybe Chicago and NYU). As soon as you submit CBS start planning for the other 2.
Thanks for the advice, thecow1000. When I said top 5, I really mean BIG 5 consulting firm (Accenture, IBM, BearingPoint, Capgemini, and Deloitte Consulting).
Disagree with WaterWalker. The BIG 5 are mostly COMPREHENSIVE service providers, whereas M / B / B are Strategy (and sometimes Operations) Consulting providers. Big 5 also do Strategy Consulting work, though most of which have been overshadowed by their traditional images.
Come on, let us face it. Well, their traditional images....... some of them should also include accounting firm ........it is always hesitated to let them into your company since you may not trust their firewall ......
I think your experience is good enough to apply top schools. However, you do need to think about how to differentiate from other consultants and the ones from "strategy" houses =p. It's about how you tell the story and demonstrate where your true passion lies. These two points are particularly important this year since there will be a lot of domestic US applicants. In another word, it is more difficult to apply from the US than from outside.
BlueT is right. You need to differentiate yourself somehow/somewhere in your application to stand out. I have so many friends from the US- Chinese Americans, White Americans who applied with 3 years of experience from IBM/Accenture IT consulting and came out empty handed. I don't know the main reasons but competition from people with similar backgrounds (IBM/Accenture IT consulting jobs are relatively easy to comeby and many people tend to apply for b-school 2-4 years out) is definitely one major issue. IT consulting is generally not as prestigious as banking and management consulting so you need to differentiate yourself. I did hear a successful case from Deloitte (IT consulting) to MIT Sloan.
I suggest you giving MIT Sloan a try. It's just my opinion, but I feel that you are at least a better fit for Sloan than Booth.
