some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while others think they should spend more time educating students. What’s your view? University professor today have several tasks. Not only do they need to conduct academic researches but they also have to give lectures to students. Some argue that professors should spend more time doing research while others believe that professors should contribute more time to educate their students. In my point of view, imparting knowledge is the primary task of university and professors should concentrate their time and energy on educating their students. While research can not be detached, university or college should allocate to work force according to specialty. Admittedly, research program plays an important role in the success of a university or a college. Quality and quantity of the research programs can reflect the creativity and comprehensive strength of the school. According to several rating agencies’ ranking reports of different universities and colleges of the world, research is as significant as academic performance and employment rate. Moreover, in China, prestigious universities have to take the responsibility to undertake some of the research and development projects which aim to help the development of the poor rural areas. Therefore, a number of professors should stay in positions to focus on researching instead of educating. However, the principal mission of a university or college is teaching. After all, it is all about the students. University or college exists only because of students not research and this is why they are called university or college not research center. Students depend on higher education in the university or college to become better qualified in the further study or future career. Thus, professors should spend more time and energy on equipping the students with knowledge and skills. Students with better mastery of knowledge and skills would increase the reputation of the professors and the university or college which would certainly improve of the quality of future enrollment. And this is just like a beneficial cycle which has a great influence on the future of the university or college. Facing with these two needs, university or college should allocate professors on different positions according to their talents. Needless to say, specialty is the driving force of the development of our society. Adam smith, the well-known economist once said in his masterpiece that specialty in the society enhance the division of labor and thus increase the social wealth for human beings. University professors are of no exception. For instance, those who have brilliant insight and remarkable creativity should be assigned to work in a research team. Since originality is the key to different discoveries, they have a greater chance than others to achieve success. On the other hand, professors who have more interest in educating and communicating with students should be put in positions of teaching instead of researching. Actually, students also like to take classes performed by passionate and intriguing professors who are ready to devote into the teaching career instead of getting wealth and fame from significant discoveries. It can be safely concluded that with the allocation according to talents and interests, we can maximize the use of resource. All in all, universities should concentrate more on educating students while they should keep a working force for research. It is wise and safe to allocate professors to these two parts according to their specialty.539
