这里的earliest不是最高级了，而是作为形容词在这里修饰

earliest的三种用法：

1）“早期”，n.
… from the earliest of Tang Dynasty.
2）形容词原级，“很早，非常早”
from earliest times/ages 从远古年代
（可以不加the）
3）形容词最高级
the earliest language(s) is/are…

我还是觉得这种说法不对，如下题中：the most abundant food sources.就是修饰了复数。

15. Carbohydrates are the most abundant and --- food sources of energy.

(A) least cost

(B) least costly

(C) less cost

(D) fewer costs

答案：B

测试点：并列结构。

分析：and两边的成份应同词性、同性质。and前为形容词最高级most abundant，and后也应是同样的最高级形式，即(B)。costly是形容词，cost是动词或名词。

个人观点，仅供参考

NO.15，主语Carbohydrates是复数，所以宾语source也用复数

NO.38 后面的谓语是is，所以前面用单数，再加上从意思上看，也应该用单数。
