(B) compared to those they can detect
(C) than that can be detected
(D) than those that can be detected
(E) than those detecting
这道题我在C与D中徘徊，还是选错了，
D正确，那末those应该指代sources，那末这里的than得比较在句子中做什莫成分呢？

twenty times fainter compared to those that can be detected by ground-based instruments.都作为修饰语修饰 sources?
我觉得自己在做题的时候把这个比较当作和light比了，所以排除了D

THOSE指代LIGHTS，与前面的LIGHT比较。

我怎莫觉得光线应该是不可数名词呢？
lights好像是多指灯吧？

指代LIGHTS是确切无疑的，是的，LIGHT作光线讲只能是单数。
但这里应该理解为“来自不同光源的各种光线”，这样理解和用法是没有问题的。
而不是理解是“许许多多的光线”

好有些疑问，fainter是形容light还是sources呢？如果如你所说，those代表lights，那末light就是比较的主体，而fainter应该形容lighter。
