我选了a，因为觉得句子结构是：not because of, but because of.... 我觉得so much只是个修饰成分，所以没用so much...as，请问这种理解对吗？

not so much...as是个固定搭配，虽然not...but也是固定搭配，但若选A则打破了一个本来很好的表达，而且，not so much...as与not...but的意思也不相同。语法重要的有两点，一是正确，这是基础，二是“好”，即在两者都正确的基础上哪种表达方法更好。
