请问大家觉得在discovery provides clues for determining这个句子结构中，for determining是修饰clues还是discovery。如果是修饰clues，那如果clues能够主动发出后面跟的动作，是不是就用to do?

for有为了.....的意思，如果后面跟to do，就是表示目的。楼主提问说for determing这个根据逻辑语义来讲确实是修饰clues,GMAT有个特别重要的考点就是修饰名词的那部分一定是要紧跟要修饰的名词的。而且这里的cluse本身就可以determine后面的东西，与用不用for或者to do是无关的。
这里摘录考GMAT里对着道题的一句话：按照GMAT惯例表目的to do > for doing, 但不代表for doing是错的，但在此处C明显没有E更简洁更通顺。所以说GMAT答案是比出来的，当然如果把E选项的for doing 改为 to do，那就更完美了。
