Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support.
I strongly support the idea that at universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support. My reasons are as follows:
On one hand, in order to address this problem, we are supposed to answer this question-what education is? This question reminds me of the concept of "health". According to a definition given by WHO, "heath" refers to both physical health and mental health. Similarly, I firmly believe that in modern society, education is not only a matter of intellectual improvement, but also a matter of the building of physical and social capability. Today's much more sophisticated society has developed a strong need for more adaptive graduates. They should not only master necessary knowledge, but also be able to face much more stressed work pace and more socialized working environment. That's why the universities and colleges should give equal weight to both curricular and extracurricular elements.
On the other hand, as a saying goes " all work no play makes Jack a dull boy". Actually, both sports and socials activities can enhance the curricular performance. Scientific studies have proved that physical exercise and good interpersonal relationship will improve a person's memory and capability to concentrate, making them study more effectively and efficiently. This may comfort those who hold the traditional point of view that universities and colleges should focus on research and teaching.
In conclusion, the education is its own sake. The college students should make their own choices on their own focus. The universities and colleges would better not "guide" them by subjecting different weight to different types of activities when allocating financial supports, which should be given to those who need it the most.
