but also here is conveying contrast, there is no doubt
regarding the use of also, here is my personal opinion:
also is used to convey two actions ( with the one connected by also showing inferior importance)
Ex: I eat an apple and also a pear. ( the meaning here might be construed as a fact that I prefer eating apple or I want to emphasize the main event I do is eating apple, while eating pear seems to be an background or inconsequentially followed one)
It seems to me that but also here is to convey contrast, with the intent of emphasizing the former one
but also seems to introduce another different attitudes ( also is used to convey that there are two attitudes possessed by the author)
again, here is an extremely subtle point and is only my personal opinion
I can assure you will not encounter any choices that only require you to make the distinction between but also and but
