看看可不可以這樣理解：

其實，這幾個they就是指Germanic languages，也就是that所代的名詞，感覺上，好像並沒有不清楚（？）。但是，從關係代名詞的子句來看，that該子句的主詞，也就是說：that.........but .......這個but子句的主詞，也應該是that，所以，這個they就重覆了。而正確答案D，則改正了這個錯誤：.... are compact when written but can lengthen considerably in English translation。

請NN指正！

个人观点：

首先，这里的they指代应该算是清晰，因为句子中没有其它的可以指代的对象。

其次，我觉得排除的关键是信息层次，A中的but can lengthen considerably when translated into English不论对错，是和前面的成份并列作为定语修饰languages，但是B中but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English就成了作为一个主句的并列成份，违背了原意，必错！

我觉得B除了没有D简洁，还有一个很重要的错误：

原句想表达的意思是，but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English 和 are compact when they are written并列，都是属于that引导的定语从句的内容，修饰languages。但是在B中，but之前加了一个逗号，就把but后面的这个句子变成了一个独立的句子，与Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that is compact when written 并列了。改变了句子的原意。

这个是B的主要错误。如果说they的指代有问题，那也是因为句子结构被改变了而引起的。

非常同意5楼。they的指代没有问题，但they是多余的。因为前面有that。

問一個笨問題,句中lengthen是主動吧,可是我總覺得好像應該用被動...

(被拉長,而不是主動變長好像比較合乎常理)
