GWD 第一套 Q16 What引导的句子单复数的问题！

其实以前讨论过。。。说根据白勇语法，what引导的句子应该使用单数，而后又说还是要根据句子内容看，所以对这个问题，还是不太明白

While digging in the Egyptian desert, huge fossile bones have been found by paleontologiests, which appears to have been the second most massive sinosaur that ever lived.

D) paleontologists have found huge fossil bones from what appears to be

答案我选对了，但是之后对于appears这个单数的用法有点纠结。。。不明白为什么是单数，我认为what指代的应该是huge fossil bones，应该是appear。

请高人指点！

原句中的, which指代不清。what 就是 the thing that，是个n+连词的关系。
