有什么语法点一定规定要but连结吗？？

but在这里的作用是作为连词连接两个独立的分句，如果没有but，前句是：

"Mauritius

was a British colony for almost 200 years" 主语是Mauritius；后句是：“the English language was never really spoken on the island” 主语是the English language，前后句主语不一致，所以必须使它们成为两个独立的句子，连词就能实现这个功能

本来就是选C啊，呵呵

不选D的原因是：in the domain,表示在某个区域，固定搭配

想请问一下，except 在这里是什么词性？如果是介词，可以这样带介宾短语么？

我的理解是，except在这里是介词，后面接固定搭配in the domains of并不矛盾。
英语里例如 put upon with这种用法里，upon是介词，但是put upon被看做一个不及物动词，后面跟了with做介词搭配就可以带宾语内容啦。
