正确答案是C。了解其它选项分别错在哪里，但是正确选项要主语是复数their numbers，请问不应该是单数么？The number of beavers has declined since the 18th century.

你做题的思路有问题，their number和their numbers都可以，但这不是解题点。首先看A，compared with the eighteenth century比较的对象不同，拿number和日期比较错误，排除；B一样，比较对象错误；C since反映出了前面的have declined这个现在完成时，正确； D中in comparison to awkward的用法，并且those有指代前面beavers的歧义而不是指代numbers，排除；E中的since是现在完成时的标志词，用过去式declined错误；

由此可知完全可以说：their numbers。做句子改错一定不能钻牛角尖，多个思路，比较选项找考点，非划线处找解题点

number不是只有一个么，应该是单数啊，the number of beavers?
