If you pool all the related questions together, you can see that all these questions share the same concept. No disagreement.

on the other hand, the context of OG12 #15 (which i'm not allowed to reproduce here) doesn't work with both expressions.in that problem, the context is “to take charge of x” vs. “for taking charge of x”.note that “taking charge of something” is NOT an ongoing process or general procedure -- it's a specific thing, that happens at a specific point in time, and either needs to be done or doesn't need to be done. it's sort of like succeeding to the presidency, or turning 18, or other such things that happen at a single point in time.given that context, we must be talking about something that needs to be done -- a remote purpose. so, in the OG example, you need "to take charge" and not "for taking charge".-by Ron

"to sell my clothes" - this is
a specific thing, that happens at a specific point in time, and either needs to be done or doesn't need to be doneIt's like "to look at the simple problem" - a one-time action
Therefore, we say "to sell my clothes, not "selling my clothes".
Here we say "to take charge", not "for taking charge", because "take charge" is an instant action.
On the other hand,
"my plan for making money" "begin studying the Native American poetry" "begin studying permutation and combination"
These are events that
span for some length of time.
(You can simply draw the time axis, and draw the event on the axis. The event is not a time point, but a block on the time axis.)
yeap, I scanned that thread yesterday.however, i am still quite confused about the question.
1. i haven't completely understood what did Ron mean by saying
“for + verbing” conveys the idea that the action is, in some generic way, oriented toward the process of “verbing”. ".
i think that in the sentence he showed--"
i need to get a new pair of shoes for running ",here, the preposition phrase"for running " is used to describe the characteristic of the shoes(more general,i think i may regard it as a noun modifier),because he said"
running shoes = shoes whose purpose is oriented toward the general process of running".
and in the sentence"
i need to get a new pair of shoes to run",i think i could regard the phrase"to run" as adverbial modifier to describe the whole preceding clause/action, and it delivers the purpose of the action.
so plz point out the mistake i made...
2. the second problem is that Ron said we have to choose "to take charge of" because the action is not an ongoing process...
3.i find what Ron said in the thread you give me about the differences between the "for VERBING" and "to VERB" is different from what he said in the study hall when he tries to explain the the "plan for" and "plan to do". I got really confused...
