OG12-68 The first trenches cut into a 500-acre site at Tell Hamoukar, Syria, have yielded strong evidence that centrally administered complex societies in northern regions of the Middle East arose simultaneously with but independently of the more celebrated city-states of southern Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq.
我想问后面的 in what is now southern Iraq 是修饰前一个绿色,还是后一个绿色?
。 而且centrally administered complex societies自己已经有地点限制: in northern regions of the Middle East。

1)不加in,是不是会“优先”指Mesopotamia (但也可能指中心词states)? 2)如果写成the more celebrated southern Mesopotamia city-states, what is now southern Iraq呢?(虽然斜体部分处理的不好哈)这时候,还需要加in吗?
