The first trenches cut into a 500-acre site at Tell Hamoukar, Syria, have yielded strong evidence that centrally administered complex societies in northern regions of the Middle East arose simultaneously with but independently of the more celebrated city-states of southern Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq.

我想问后面的 in what is now southern Iraq 是修饰前一个绿色，还是后一个绿色？会不会有歧义？（句子已经是正确选项。）我觉得是前一个，因为需要跟动词 arose.

应该是做定语修饰city-states of southern Mesopotamia...毕竟iraq其实就是Mesopotamia的现代称呼。。
而且centrally administered complex societies自己已经有地点限制： in northern regions of the Middle East。
还有in what做的是定语，不需要跟动词arose.

多谢斑竹！欧不知道Iraq是以前的Mesopotamia。。
那么in what里面的in去掉或者留着是不是会改变意思？如果没有in, 就说明他们就是iraq, 如果有in,地点就没有那么绝对？所以，应该是有in比较符合实际。

不能没有in哦，因为在这里同位语更可能修饰的是前面名词短语的核心词，就是states，而不是Mesopotamia.

1）不加in，是不是会“优先”指Mesopotamia (但也可能指中心词states)？
2）如果写成the more celebrated southern Mesopotamia city-states, what is now southern Iraq呢？（虽然斜体部分处理的不好哈）这时候，还需要加in吗？我总觉得加in会影响范围的界定（不加的话，表示x就是y；加的话，表示x在y这个位置，但x和y不一定是完全一样的）。

1. 对的。同位语不丧失指代A of B中B的功能，只是倾向于指代A，除非逻辑上很合理地指向B。
2. 理解正确。不过需要加in，毕竟states是“在what is now southern Iraq里”。
