For personal reasons, I had to take the iBT. Only after registering for the test, I realized that TOEFL had a face-lift and looked much different from what I prepared for decades ago. Due to the time constraint, I only took the simulation test offered free by ETS online as part of the registration process. After a month I walked into the test center as a NAKED test-taker.
Many young boys and girls lined up before and after me. They must have been wondering what this old lady was doing here! I did not and would not blame them. After filling out the forms, having my picture taken, I entered the computer room. The earphone was O.K. But the microphone was kind of short. Anyway, I managed to set up the whole system and the test began.
It was a funny feeling when I heard all kinds of accents, and all kinds of stories/answers spilled out by other test-takers. I had to blank out all those noise and focus on my sceen, my questions. The whole process went smoothly except for a few questions, for which I ran out of time to give a full answer. At the end of the 3-hour drill, I was exhausted, but happy.
A month later came the reasult - 115. Not bad considering that I had no specific training for the new TOEFL test. At least I put the chapter behind me. I am sure that had I come here, I would have earned a few more points. |
