Educators should base theirassessment of students' learning not on students' grasp of facts but on theability to explain the ideas, trends, and concepts that those facts illustrate. Write a response in which youdiscuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation andexplain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supportingyour position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendationwould or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape yourposition. Outline: Agree. 1. Grasp of the facts is the firststep to understand the idea or core of the knowledge. Rote memorization is a term forfixing information in your memory 2. But we should stop at the firststep. The ideas, trends, and concepts are the core of the things, the ultimateproject of learning is understanding the fundamental inside ideas of the facts. And we find it almost impossible to remember something that we don't properlyunderstand. Many students just recite the highlight points that would appear onthe exams. 3. Only when we integrated with thecore of the knowledge can we apply it. To be a learner, we are supposed torecognize the ideas of things. It is a common phenomena that theterminal exam papers are full of issues that only depends on the textbooks. Andthe score of the paper is utilized to evaluate the degree to which the studentsup to. Some people think it's not an effectiveand equal criteria, I share the same standpoint.
Admittedly, rote the knowledge including thewhole exact points is essential and necessary. Being educated is a series ofprocesses. Rote memorization, a term impliesfixing information to one's mind, is the first step to integrate knowledge andonly when you have done it can you turn for the understanding step. Forexample, if we want to learn a language, we have to rote the words becausesentences are formed of them. Recognizing the words, then reading the sentencesand finally grasping the idea. The words are to language what periodic table isto chemistry. The elements of the periodic table are the most fundamentalfactor of the chemistry as all reactions involves them, so without rememberingthe quality and name of these elements we could not figure out the reaction ofthem. In such circumstances, rote memorization is crucial and meaningful.
However, remember the exact wordsof the knowledge is not the ultimate target of learning. Even though reciting isthe basement of ideology, we are supposed to completely understand the ideas, trends and concepts of knowledge. Students could hardly improve their criticalthinking and creative thinking merely via rote memorization. Basic to masterthe specific knowledge is to grasp its vital core. In addition, it's generallybelieved that it is almost impossible to remember something long-time that wedon't properly understand. It's sad to see a common situation that many collegestudents don't study or reading the textbook subtly until the last week of theterm. And at the end of the term, they just rote the highlight points thatwould appear on the exam paper. And the contents will totally be erased fromtheir brain after the exams. In such circumstance, students don't learn anythingat all. All they acquire is the passage of the exams. No doubt, it is harmfulto not only the students themselves but also the academicatmosphere of the college. It follows an unequal phenomena that some studentsactually master the knowledge and could apply it practically but they don'tremember the exact definitions whereas the cram students could write the exactwords and get better scores.
Furthermore, we could apply theknowledge only if we intergrate the concepts and ideas of it. For example, students have specific subjects that evaluate students' ability through aproject alluding that students are obligated to use what they have learned in apractical way. In this circumstance, they could not only rote the books orother materials. It's necessary for them to grasp the ideas, trends, andconcepts of the facts and then put them into use or even advance them. Hence,in the circumstance like this, roting the facts is meaningless and could not bea base assessment of students' learning.
In a word, the ability of graspingthe facts, though it is an essential procedure, could not appropriately androundly reflect the true level of a student's learning. The terminal goal of thestudy is integrating the knowledge which implies one should understand thecrucial core of it and then apply it practically and undisputedly this processneeds an exact understanding of the ideas, trends and concepts of knowledge.
