1. During the Renaissance, scholars were uncertain as to the location of Troy, and by the eighteenth century many historians doubted that Troy had ever existed.

(A) doubted that Troy had ever existed

(B) doubt that Troy has ever existed

(C) were in doubt as to the existence of Troy

(D) were doubtful concerning Troy’s existence（A）

(E) had doubts about Troy’s ever existing

我首先排除的是doubted作为动词，因为doubt作为动词后面接whether,除非doubt前有否定才跟that连用。再者本人觉得C选项与前面的as to the location of Troy是并列结构，这样更妥。答案是A而不是C，这是为什么呢？

答案当然是A；

1.根据VAN原则，首先排除C D E;
2.根据前句scholars were uncertain 判断失态为过去时；
根据by the eighteenth century 判断应该用完成时

PS：所有选项里面都没有whether。你肿么办。。

综上，所以用过去完成时选择A

这种题目并不是只有一个方面的问题；对我来说，显然in doubts 不能这样用，你如果经常查英文词典就会知道他表示的是一种不确定。而本句的意思是对他曾经存在严重怀疑（怀疑和不确定区别很大，你怀疑……有外遇VS你不确定……有外遇？能一样吗）。
例；
Always proofread completed letters very carefully. Consult dictionary when necessary or in doubt
The future of the stadium is in doubt because of a lack of money.
I am in doubt what to do
