解释中supplementing would normally be expected to modify the first clause, describing or extending its meaning, but the logic of this sentence demands a contrast...这里讲的作用是supplementing的作用还是分词的作用? But the logic of this sentence demands a contrast, 不是已经有but了吗？

这里讲的作用，应该是指现在分词的作用，现在分词本身就是对前面分句意思的延伸或修饰，而but表示转折，所以我怀疑but连接的分词结构，都是错误的，因为逻辑上就矛盾了，当然这个是我逻辑的考虑，如果有G友发现but连接现在分词，请指正

supplementing分词省略形式是they supplement而不是they supplemented,时态和were不对
