The author take for granted that it is the best approach for students to be well educated if they take courses of all majors. This advocation means that the more knowledge you learn, the more educated or achievements you will get.
I am inclined to support this idea which can be substantiated by the following discussions. Due to all courses being related to each other, touching more academic fields may contribute to major research by inspiring scholars' thoughts. Lucas, a well-known economist, taking Math as a reasoning tool, explant the mystery of Lucas that why capital of developed countries is not invested to poor countries under the circumstances that poor countries have more cheaper resources. By mixing these 2 subjects, Lucas tackle this problem clearly and readily instead of tedious words.
However, being well-educated people doesn't mean he or she took lots of courses. People also have to have a good personality and correct values. Chen Shuibian, a predecessor of Ma Yingjiu who is Taiwan's president now, graduated from the department of laws in Taiwan University, the best one in Taiwan Province. And his rank in major is very high. Nevertheless, due to his bribery and corruption, he failed to go on in his politic career, which is mainly resulted from his incorrect notions. The personal value is crucial to a person's whole life, not only the education.
In addition, studying so many courses simultaneously may take too much time to make the students specialized in their major, which will waste their gifts. Han Han, an excellent writer in China mainland, has created many popular books in his writing career. He used to be a "bad" boy in high school because he had lots of subjects failed except for Chinese and getting many trophies in writing competition. But he refused an admission to Fudan University, a top3 university in China in that Han knows himself well that he is born for writing, not a well-developed writer whose knowledge covers all academic fields.
In modern society, people have to be faced with the reality. An increasing number of graduate have been an intern for at least one job. So, studying other courses waste their free time to earn work experience of the resume, which miss the original purpose of their entering the university.
Absorbing a large amount of knowledge is not the sole essential element to be Well-educated people, which may accelerate the process to be an educated person. But people have to take many actual problems and their own inspirations into account, like living or dreams, which may be contradictory to that. |
