其中D选项是with its hundreds of miniature eyes called
ommatidia, help explain scientists' assuming that is 。

OG给出D选项的问题是explain scientists
assuming is verbose and awkward, and the
use of the assuming with the possessive
makes the construction unnecessarily。（helps没有疑问）
我不理解为什么scientists assuming 反而被OG解释为更冗长了？

在这里assuming是用作名词形式了吧？也就是你要把本来主动发出动作的语态“scientists have assumed that”改为“scientists‘ assuming+解释这个assuming的从句”，用主动语态直接assum就行，不用表达为名词形式再解释这个名词了。我觉得“冗长”并不意味着句子的长短，而意指句子的简洁和直接程度也就是语法书一直强调的concision。再加之“scientists‘ assuming“这个结构本来就不标准，就更不能选了。
我自己的看法，不一定对，你斟酌着看~

OG的解释说了很清楚了：the use of assuming with the possessive is unwarranted；
我记得RON也说过possessive+verbing是不preferred的，而且其实意思也有些许的转变，因为 possesive+verbing的主体其实是verbing，那这里就是assuming。原句想表达的意思是explain why scientist assume（为什么科学家会假设---探求假设的原因）；而不是explain scientist's assuming that(解释科学家的假设---单纯的解释这个假设)，这两个意思有着本质上的不同。
