OG 113 (请教)

OG 113:

Visitors to the park have often looked up into the leafy canopy and saw monkeys sleeping on the braches, whose arms and legs hang like socks on a clothesline.

(A) saw monkeys slooping on the branches, whose arms and legs hang
(B) saw monkeys sleeping on the branches, whose arms and legs were hanging
(C) saw monkeys sleeping on the brandches, with arms and legs hanging
(D) seen monkeys sleeping on the brandches, with arms and legs hanging
(E) seen monkeys sliiping on the branches, whose arms and legs have hung

问题:
1,根据OG,"Choices A, B, and E awkwardly separate the relative clause beginning whose arms and legs... from monkeys, the noun it modifies."
为什么whose引导的定语从句不能与主句断开呢?非限定性定从不是可以的吗?

2,根据OG,正确答案为D.但我不明白为什么?如果把D简化为以下结构:
Visitors...have looked up...and seen..., with arms and legs hanging.
那岂不是visitors 的arms and legs hanging 吗?

请英雄指教!

1、感觉OG的解释想要表达的是,WHOSE从句离修饰对象太远,容易造成混淆,而不是说本身的这种从句方式有问题。

2、介词短语在句尾时,修饰关系比较复杂,需要句子意思的判断。偶认为这道题你说的有道理,但是只能通过比较选项来找答案了,没有办法,通过时态、分词平行。D是最优的,但不是绝对没有歧义的。这也是GMAT SC最麻烦的地方。

Visitors...have looked up...and have seen monkey..., with arms and legs hanging.

pay attention to the verb phrase "have seen" which indicates that "with arms and legs hanging" refers to the object "monkey" instead of "visitors"

谢谢两位指教。但我还是有点不明白:

1,braveMBA,你的意思是不是说,“,”使得whose 从句离开它所修饰的“monkeys"太远了呢?还是......

2. mjiehu, for what reason, the verb phrase "have seen" , in your words, indicates that "with arms and legs hanging "  modifies the object "monkey" instead of "visitors"?

不好意思,再次请教!

不仅仅是逗号使它们远了,是因为中间的sleeping on the branches, 而且,WHOSE的前面又是一个名词branches更会造成混乱。

的确会造成歧义
给你一句例句:

I saw the boy with the telescope.
=I saw the boy through (by using) a telescope.
=I saw the boy who had a telescope.

但是在这里只有D有可能对阿

I think:"with arms and legs hanging." is used to modify the action "sleeping" but not any object.

For example:They arrived, sound and  safe. “sound and safe”modify the verb "arrived"
