number 和numbers的区别

看了很多这两者的讨论，都没有定论，可以这样理解吗？

a number of +动词复数

vast numbers of +动词复数

the numbers of 这种表达是错误的

请指教

the number of的表达没错,意思是表示一个数字,比如说一个the number of the page is 23.不是指一共有23页,而是指页数是23;又例如OG 178,the number of convicted criminals given community service sentences has risen dramatically,这里也是指一个数字,而不是多少判决,所以用单数has.

我记得前几天还搜到一个贴讨论the numbers of的，好像OG最后几题里出现过这样的用法（ETS编到最后也昏了）

"numbers" is possible in a few contexts. If you wish to make a comparison, use greater than, not more than(which might imply that the quantity of numbers is larger, not the numbers themselves)
