There is a general discussion nowadays concerning that the most vital responsibility of professor is doing research or teaching students. Those who believe that the professor should most time on doing research argue that the development of the technology depends on the time of doing research the professor spend on, but some other people who claim that the most essential task of professor is teaching students in a university argue that the professor would bring about a large amount of advantages by teaching students. In my perspective, I would coincident with the latter who advocate that the professor should focus on teaching students for several reasons.
In the first place, students, if professor make no effort to teach them, would obtain considerably useful skills and knowledge in the university, which would benefit them to find satisfied jobs. Professor who have affluent experience and knowledge play a remarkably important role in teaching students in the university, I have heard some examples from one of my friend who complained to me that one of the professor who teach her professional course concentrate all his attention to his research and never pay more time on teaching them, so she can not totally understand some vital points of this subject and even faced up with a lot of difficulties in the examination. In contrast, even though my professor have his own research, he spend more time teaching us, solving the problems we have met. Finally, we all get great grades.
Furthermore, teaching students would also benefit to the research of the professor. If the professor have taught the student comprehensive knowledge and skill, the student could help the professor with the professor doing his research. In my university, it is not unusual that the professor ask their students to help them do the research. one of my professor teach us biochemistry, he often tell us many kinds of his interesting experience and some useful information which could not fine on the book, and he show us many experiments on the class, which help us get a full-scale knowledge. And then he ask us to do some research with him. During the period we work together we communicate our idea with each other about the topic of the research, and then we achieve a great success.
Sometimes, the professor, if he spend too much time on teaching students, would definitely influence his process of his research. for example, the professor is going on a essential part of his research, if he spend too much time on teaching, he would miss the crucial chance that he might succeed. Or the class he teach is simple that there is no necessary to pay more attention to teach them too much, he could just do his research without wasting much time on other things. By the way, the development of science and technology depend on them and their effort.
In conclusion,from what we has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that the professor could help students acquire more comprehensive knowledge and benefit to themselves by spending more time on teaching. considerable though the advantages that the professor focusing on research result in are, it can not compete with the advantages that paying more attention to teach students.
