The writer claims that governments should provide their major cities with financial support in order to guarantee their prosperity for the reason that a nation’s cultural traditions are well-preserved and generated there. Admittedly, the metropolises are truly important for a nation for their characteristics, it is not sufficient for us to believe that those major cities are prior to all other areas.
We ought to be aware that the metropolises, where the mainstream culture, economy affairs and politics take place, are irreplaceable to a country. No one could deny that Beijing does play an essential role in China, for the city conveys a lot of characteristics of China, such as Beijing Opera, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and so on. And it is also widely known that the New York City, which could best reflect the prosperity of America, is a symbol of the country. So these cities truly deserve the investment to develop.这么说是很勉强的,即使大城市的确是文化集中的地方,但是否必然意味着政府要资助呢,你的逻辑推理是什么?需要什么前提,什么时候什么样的文化需要政府支持而其他的又为何不要等等
However, it is not the truth that a nation’s cultural traditions are primarily preserved and generated in big cities. We could not simply equate a nation’s culture with the mainstream culture of metropolises regardless of some folklores and handcrafts. Almost every tourist coming to China from foreign countries will buy some embroidery, which is an ancient and complex handcraft in south China. But one may find it hard to get authentic handmade embroidery in the developed big cities like Shanghai and Nanjing. On the contrary, in many rural areas in south China, the residents living in some rural areas possess such crafts. It is quite common that a plenty of precious traditions and handcrafts are well preserved in the countryside rather than those metropolises.
In the era of rapid development of globalization and economy, major cities in different countries do share a lot of features. The same skyscrapers, crowded metro and glitter lights have made those modern cities more and more uniform. A good example is that one of my English teachers coming from New York City got used to the life in Shanghais on partly due to the similarities between two cities. So the characteristics of a metropolis may not be a good indication of a country’s culture custom and history.
To sum up, we concede that a major city plays a critical role in a country, while it does not suffice to convince us that big cities ought to be supported by governments. Overlooking the some towns and countryside may jeopardize the culture of a country. And major cities could be subsidized by wealthy individuals, corporations or social institutions. |
