Issue 82. Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country.

Since the entering of twenty-first century, the tendency of the globalization of education has been more and more obvious. More and more students choose to study abroad or participate in international exchange student program in order to broaden their visions and enrich their experiences. In this situation, many people believe that universities should require students to spend at least one semester studying abroad. However, I am afraid that even though studying abroad has many advantages, the universities should not require all students to study abroad for at least one semester considering the problem of cost and the differences between various majors.

Apparently, studying abroad will give students the chances of learning much knowledge which are not easy for learning when studying domestically. These knowledge are both for fields their major in and living and communication. Studying abroad not only let the students understand the situation of foreigner counterparts but also give the students opportunities to communicate with the best experts in their fields. Furthermore, considering that students always go to study abroad alone, it is a tough task for their ability of looking after themselves and communicating with others. Facts proved that comparing to the students who study domestically, after studying abroad, students can not only improve their ability in learning but also the ability to deal with the problem of relationship and independence.

However, whether the universities should require the students to study abroad or not has other concerns. For students whose majors are foreign literature or international relationship, studying abroad is important and profitable for their studying. But for the students whose majors are math or engineering, it is to reconsider whether it is worth to study abroad. Considering that students whose majors are math or engineering are still at foundational level when they are undergraduate, studying abroad might not only fail to help them improve their academic ability, but also leads to a reduction of academic ability because of spending of too much time to adapt the life and language of foreign country. So, before requiring all the students to study abroad, universities should take the specific situations of different majors into consideration.

Furthermore, the cost of studying abroad is a problem which can hardly be ignored. Comparing to studying domestically, studying abroad will cost large amount money no matter for the families or universities. If the families of students are needed to afford the spending, requiring all students to study abroad for at least one semester might be beyond their power for the families which are on tight budget. If the universities are needed to afford the spending, that will be an expenditure of a huge amount of money. Considering that this money can be used to renovate the libraries or laboratories, invite the visiting scholars or employ foreign teachers, the universities should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of both methods in order to decide whether spending money on studying abroad is a worthy one.

In summary, studying abroad has many obvious advantages for a student, but the universities should choose to requiring students though screening to study abroad according to different specific situations of various majors and financial conditions.
