34.The vice president of human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement(执行,使生效) electronic monitoring(监控) of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational(娱乐的) activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster(培养) a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
In this argument, the vice president considers that by installing a software to monitor the employees activities with computer could be helpful for the company.Because this policy is going to prevent the workers from wasting time and thus bringing the company a higher profit.However, this argument is less convincing. The vice president makes a number of assumptions that are not based on the real effects.
The vice president assumes that the software could prevent the workers from doing private things and thus enhances their work efficiency. However, the real condition could be different from that, because the software itself may have some problems.Installing the software could cost some money and time.Moreover, the software, though it could prevent employees from playing with their computers, may at the same time cause some problems to the computer. Perhaps the software could slow down the speed of the system of the computers. Or the software could not coexist with some special software for work use.Besides, the employees who have a master computer skill may come up with ideas to fool the software.In those ways, the software could not enhance the work efficiency.
The vice president is assuming that by cutting time from doing private things and playing with computer, the employees are going to put more time on their work.However, this assumption is less likely to be true.Actually the workers, if they are lazy, could do a number of things other than work even though they could not play with their computer.For example, they may read a newspaper, drink a coffer or chat with their colleagues.These things may even cost more time than doing private things with their computer.What is more, the employees may feel uncomfortable since they are under the monitor.They are going to do everything with too much cautious, and this cautious may even lower their work efficiency.
The vice president assumed that the company is going to make high profit by monitor their employees.This opinion seems not true.The profit of a company relates to a number of factors.Even though after installing the monitor software, employees put more time on their work, this factor alone could never guarantee the company has a wonder profit.It is known to all that the market strategy is important to a company.If the company do not have an outstanding leader, it is less likely to make a high profit and develop itself. Moreover, market condition is important to a company.If the company could catch the opportunity in the market, it is more likely to make a high profit.The vice president fails to take those reasons into his or her consideration.
To sum up, it is easy to know the vice president would like to gain more profit for the company.However, monitor the using of computers is less likely to be a wonderful idea.Actually, this policy is more likely to get backslide efforts which is not the vice president wants.
