5 Claim: Knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.

The speaker claims that Knowing about the past can not help people to make important decision today, because the world today is significantly more complex than it was even in the relatively recent past. While I only partly agree with the a more complex world view, I think it is unconvincing to conclude that we cannot learn from the past. We can see why is that by  the following paragraphs.

First,  now matter how things have become more complex or easier or what-so-ever, it is important and necessary for us to learn from the past.  To understand this point, we need to look no further than the example of the effort we have been apply to stop and prevent bullying on our children. In the past, bullying usually happened on the school yard, where the victim is physically and verbally abused by other peers. In order to educate our whole society including especially our schools to realize the issue and fix the problem, we spent fund and other resources to help the victim to stand up for himself and seek proper help from teacher and parent. And let us see what we have achieved. According to a survey published in a recent issue of Time, the percent of students that reported have been bullied on campus has dropped significantly compared to past decade, while more student are now become concern with bullying online. It is true that internet is a more recent thing than it was a decade ago for most kids, but is there nothing we can learn from the past that will help us to better deal with the new kind of bullying? The answer is no, since we will still learn from the past how the bullied suffer tremendously now matter the bullying is happening  on line or on the campus. And we also can use the same resources to target the new issue. As we can see, learning from the past is helping us to cope with the new situation.

It is no doubt that thing has changed from the past. Some issue has become more complex.  For example,  when people were mainly dealing with the high rate of heart attack in the U.S. 50 years ago, and Adventists concluded that saturated fat and red meat is bad for our hear, today Adventists and doctors are dealing with a still high attack rate plus a thirty Recent of obese population in the U.S. . But we can also learn form the past that people have been avoiding fat and read meat, but consumed more carbohydrate since that. This change of diet may contribute to resolve our current issue of more people are overweight.

In sum, world has been changing, but learning from the past will help us to better deal with it.
