mamhattan 6th chapter 4 problem set上：People, who talk loudly on their cell phones in crowded trains, show little respect for oth-
er passengers.
who talk...crowded trains: INCORRECT. This clause is wrong because the commas that en-close it make it a nonessential clause. The logic of the sentence calls for an essen-tial clause, because the rest of the sentence would change its meaning without theinformation in the relative clause. (The sentence People show little respectfor otherpassengers makes a sweeping claim about every human being.) To correct this er-ror, remove the commas.

求问大神们，nonessential clause的结构是不是只有comma+which,一般不用comma+who?
还有如何辨别哪些句子应该用essential，哪些应该是nonessential?

定语从句之前加逗号的都是非限定性修饰语，去掉之后并不影响句子表达的意思，有没有都一个样。限定性定语定语从句不可以随便去掉。

你看下你提到的这个例子
People, who talk loudly on their cell phones in crowded trains, show little respect for other passengers.
这个句子who的定语从句就是非限定性定语从句，你把它去掉之后，people就变成了所有的人，就是所有的人对其他的乘客都不尊重。

如果去掉逗号之后，就是限定性从句，那么就是那些大声讲话的人对其他乘客不尊重，表示在people中有些人在火车上大声讲话，有些人并没有大声讲话，而这些大声讲话的人对其他乘客不尊重。

限定性和非限定性定语从句是看是否分类，还是在解释说明。
Snakes that are reptiles are quite. (属于爬行动物的snakes是安静的。）
Snakes, which are reptiles, are quite. （snakes是爬行动物，它们是安静的。）
所以，不是单纯的非限定性定语从句可有可无。限定性从名的功能是缩小。
