Ron: in fact, i have no idea of the formal explanation for this error; as a seasoned writer, i just know that "things that look like this are wrong" (as i'm advising you above). the following is completely made up off the top of my head, but i'll try my best to come up with some sort of justification. my best shot at explaining this: when you have a prepositional phrase at the beginning, like that, the sentence is grammatically identical to what it would be if you placed the prepositional phrase later on (but still somewhere that preserved the meaning). so, this sentence is identical to Beatrix Potter carefully coordinated them ... in her book illustrations, in which "them" clearly can't stand for book illustrations. i hope that helps. but, again, seriously, you are FAR better off just committing this particular case to memory and eliminating any future choices that happen to look like it.
