今天做题目的时候做到下面这题：
197. (GWD-1-Q16)

Soaring television costs accounted for morethan half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greaterproportion than it was in any previous election.

A. a greater proportionthan it was

B. a greater proportionthan

C. a greater proportionthan they have been

D. which is greaterthan was so (B)

E. which is greaterthan it has been

正确答案是B, 语法笔记上说这个句子中只是单个名词(proportion)的比较，所以不需要考虑than后面补出主谓，只补出介词短语就够了，不用担心后面的介词短语in any previouelection没有平行对象

但是，在prep08 举出来的以下这道例题：

大全10. A large rise in the number of housing startsin the coming year should boost new construction dollars by several billiondollars, making the construction industry’s economic health much more robustthan five years ago.

(A) making theconstruction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago

(B) and make theconstruction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago

(C) making theconstruction industry’s economic health much more robust than it was five yearsago

(D) to make theconstruction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago

(E) in making theconstruction industry’s economic health much more robust than it as five yearsago

Key: C

这题的比较对象时Construction industry's economic health，也是单个名词，不同时间点的比较。为什么省略了主谓的A选项不对呢？是因为 five years ago 是时间状语没有介词吗？？

所有的对比都可以看成平行!
这是我的理解。
第一题的A选项，it指代什么? spending or campaign? 都说不通吧!
这里的B选项确实有省略: a greater proportion than (proportion) in any previous election.
需要注意的是省略必须是exact match for their counterparts才可以。

根据以上的思路，看第二题。
s v o， making N more robust than it was 5 years ago。
这里的it was在前面有没有match counterparts??
没有!
所以不能省。

以上也不完全是我自己摸索出来的，如果你还是不明白，完全可以去google上搜索，看看manhattan等论坛的instructor的解释。

我还发现verbal 2nd98 和你的第一题是一个类型的，你可以去看看。
当然还有og13th的42题和第二题是一个类型。
你可以想想为什么一个省一个不省。我的理解 match counterpsrts吗?

这里随便说说我的理解，请高手指正：

a greater proportion than.... 应该是同位语从句，proportion是more than half的同位语？  （这里其实搞不太清楚，请轻拍）
也就说其实完整的句子应该是Soaring television costs accounted for a greater proportion of the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992 than _____
这样就很明显不能是A或者C了吧

也可以做个简单点的转化：
I spent 1000 dollars in 1992, more money than in any previous years.
错误：A. more money than it was
      C. more money than it has/they have been
      F. more money than it had been
还有，more money than (that)/(that I had spent) 括号里加上应该都没问题，但因为省略也没有歧义，出于简洁可以省略

(A) making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago

Key: C

A有两种省略可能：
1. 即C：making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than (it was) five years ago，比的是economic health
2. making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than (making it) five years ago 比的是making
所以不能省略。

这个OG有一道类似的题：

To develop more accurate population forecasts, demographers have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic determinants of
fertility.
(A) have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic
(B) have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical

OG的解释是不能和now比较，其实，A也是有上面同样的问题：

1. B: have to know a great deal more than (they do) now about the social and economical (比的是know, 他们现在知道的比）
2. B: have to know a great deal more than (they have to) now about the social and economical （比的是have to, 和他们必须知道的比）

这道题也困扰了我很久，今天狂搜cd上的解释，也看了aokaok给的连接，综合前辈们的分析，我是这样理解的，请大家指正

a greater proportion 同位语，指代more than half the spending
替换则是Soaring television costs accounted for a greater proportion of the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992 than _____
所以很明显选B,
或者另一种看法是than做代词指代proportion(prep08 218)，即后面省略了that
或者是than后面省略了it had been
（我自己已经晕了。。。继续求NN解救）

187. To develop more accurate population forecasts, demographers would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic determinants of fertility.
这个now作为时间状语在比较句的后半句，而前半句找不到任何时间状语跟它比较，所以只能把后半句句子补全来做句子和句子的比较。
同样，这题： A large rise in the number of housing starts in the coming year should boost new construction dollars by several billion dollars, (C) making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than it was five years ago
也是five years ago在前面找不到可以对比的时间状语，所以把句子补全了。

比较可以省略 exactly same 的部分

关键是那个"in"，注意到它问题就迎刃而解，不知能否帮到楼主
