Issue 41 题目:
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Who can decide the greatness ofindividuals, those who live after them or their contemporaries? The speakerchooses the former; however, I think the speaker's sweeping categorizingneglects the difference between subjects or fields concerning this issue. Whenit comes to the business arena, it is likely that greatness is judged by the contemporaries. But in the field of literature, people who live after the individuals tend togive more objective judgments. And in scientific research, it has to bediscussed in more specific ways.

Turning first to the business affairs, splendid individuals are always judged by their peers. A look at CEO ofFacebook, Mark Zuckerberg was famous when he was in Harvard and he founded thecompany with one of his roomies. And now, he becomes the youngest billionairein the world. Even though he is 28 this year, his talent and gifts in computerprogramming and business have been shown to the world. If he was not recognizedby the world around him, he may get his Bachelor degree or even Ph.D. inHarvard, but it is impossible for him to be as successful as he is now. Andbecause of his less likely to be recognized by the world, he will lack theenthusiasm in tapping out new ways of people's communications on the Internet, therefore such a successful man will not be discovered.

However, when it comes to the literaturefield, things seem quite different, Literature works are not always great inthe contemporary world, and it is the time that tests whether a work ofliterature is good or not. Some people argue that many books becomebest-selling when the writer of them is alive. Admitted that it is true, but Idon't agree with the argument that best-sellers can reflect the greatness of awriter. Whether a writer is great or a literature work is excellent are judgedby the readers and critics in long terms. Can a book that is best-seller inthis ten years but is discarded by the people a century after be a great work?I can't agree with it and I think most of us will not agree with it.

Finally, in the realm of science, thingsare becoming more complex. In some subjects like mathematical, peers are thosewho can judge the greatness of a mathematician; yet things are totally reversedin physics. Mathematicians such as Bernoulli or Cauchy are all the mathematicalbig shots it their time, since mathematics is the discipline that requiresaccurate prove, and any flaw in the proving process can be recognized by thecontemporaries. But physics is a discipline that based on experiments, whichcan make the result uncertain for the technology condition. With thedevelopment of technology, many experiments are proved inaccurate or evenfalse. In this way, the greatness of physicists is always decided by those wholive after them.

To sum up, who can judge the greatness ofindividuals is a complex question. Things can be entirely different indifferent kind of fields. Just a look at business, scientific and literatureareas can we recognize the complexity of this issue.
