求助，OG第二版语法中有三道题不解，请各位指教啊

OG第二版语法中No. 70 (on page 258):
The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was shaply restricted in the early 1970s.
正确答案是A, 就是以上的原句。可是我不太明白，its numbers 是指它的数量吗？与the number of it 有什么不同么，另外原句中是否存在比较的错误呢？（我记得在刘振民老师语法改错中，有一种错误是than 之前是有时间短语修饰的某物，than之后是一个时间状语。不知道以上原句有这个错误么，还是我理解出了问题。）

OG第二版语法中No.75：
Scientists have observed large concentrations of heavy-metal deposits in the upper twenty centimeters of Baltic Sea sediments, which are consistent with the growth of industrial activity there.
正确答案为: (D): sediments from the Baltic Sea, findings consistent with the growth of industrial activity in the area.
我有一处不明白，在正确的句子里。findings是做同位语成分么？如果不是同位语，应该是什么成分呢？如果是同位语，那么同位语不应该紧跟所修饰的名词么？

关于同位语是否紧跟所修饰的名词，我参考的是OG第二版语法NO.79 的解释，（解释如下），但很有可能是我对于解释的理解出了问题，各位请多多指教啊！！
解释：(og 语法no.79 的(B)选项解释：the appositive phrase must have a noun or noun phrase as a clear antecedent.
