Argument 47.
The following appeared in a memorandum from the owner of Movies Galore, a chain of movie-rental stores.
“Because of declining profits, we must reduce operating expenses at Movies Galore’s ten movie-rental stores. Raising prices is not a good option, since we are famous for our low prices. Instead, we should reduce our operating hours. Last month our store in downtown Marston reduced its hours by closing at 6:00 p.m. rather than 9:00 p.m. and reduced its overall inventory by no longer stocking any DVD released more than five years ago. Since we have received very few customer complaints about these new policies, we should now adopt them at all other Movies Galore stores as our best strategies for improving profits.”
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
While maybe these new policies the author mentioned above can do work reasoning that it does save some operating expenses. However, the author fails to convince me that these polices are the best strategies to improve profits in all Movies Galore stores because the argument rests on a series of unwarranted assumptions. Furthermore, the logical errors and unreasonable illustration make the author's argument even more ill-conceivable and irrational.
Firstly, the author assumes that raising prices is not a good option to increase profits because they are famous for their low price. It seems available at the surface. However, the author fails to provide any evidence to demonstrate that raising prices indeed cannot bring us profits. With the development of economy, we all know that prices' going up happens very often nowadays. What occurs at the same time is the increasing level of people's consumption. If the store can take a proper raising which meets with people's consumption level. The customers can understand it very well and it can prevent the prices from declining. Moreover, we cannot eliminate the possibility that our consumers are more interested in our good serving attitude or rich inventory. Thus the price is not a problem for them at all. Unless the author provides me a entire and reliable survey which can show the actual reason leading to the profit declining, I cannot agree on the author's views that raising prices is not a good option to increase profit.
Secondly, granted that raising price is truly not a good way and we indeed need to take hands on reducing operating expenses. I cannot tell reducing the operating hours and inventory is the most proper alternative. The author fails to supply the information concerning the benefit downtown Marston gained in last month. Can it offset the selling declining which results from the shorter opening time and fewer inventories? If it saves costs in expense of bigger profit lost, how can we tell it's a good option? With this crucial data’s unknowing, I cannot develop a better evaluation about the author’s idea.
Last but not the least, confessed that these polices work efficiently in downtown Marston, the author's inference that these polices can be extended to all the other Movies Galore stores is still unpersuasive and open to doubt. Every store's condition is different from each other's and determined by various factors such as, location, main consumers, people’s interests etc. Without reliable and strict investigation about every store's exclusive conditions, we cannot hastily get this conclusion.
To sum up, the author's argument mentioned above is not based on valid evidence or sound reasoning, neither of which is dispensable for a conclusive argument. To convince me that reducing opening hours is a good way to improve profits, one must provide detail information about the remarkable profits which were brought to us by the author's manner. To better evaluate the argument, every store's specific condition is also needed to be carefully considered. |
