如果分成两个句子的话，我们把逗号改成句号并去掉AND.这段话就变成

Unlike frogs that metamorphose from tadpoles into adults within a one-year period, mountain yellow-legged frogs of the Sierra Nevada take three to four years to reach adulthood.
So they are restricted to deeper bodies of water that do not dry up in summer or freeze solid in winter.

这样就能看出来两个句子的关系，并非主从，而是因果。
