一道GWD的语法争议题

According to a 1996 survey by the National Association of College an University Business Officers, more than three times as many independent institutions of higher education charge tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year than those that charge over $16,000.

A) than those that charge

B) than are charging

C) than to charge

D) as charge

E) as those charging

答案给的是E，我觉得应该选D
D中的charge over $16,000和前面的charge tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year 对称，charge前面省略了institutions of higher education
E中的those 可能有歧义，不知道是指代institutions of higher education 还是指代tuition and fees，如果要消除歧义，把E中的charging改为charge这样those就可以明确地指代institutions of higher education

答案给的是E，我觉得应该选D
D中的charge over $16,000和前面的charge tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year 对称，charge前面省略了institutions of higher education

当然选E。下面是我自己的一点总结。

1这里的比较对象是institution，从这个角度分析，这里比较的收费在16000以上的学校与收费在8000一下的学校。所以补出those句子意思很清晰。单纯用charge，容易误以为是charge above 16000与charge under 8000这两个动作在比较。E选项很对称，不是么？

2从经验角度分析，比较后面的成分中比较对象是应该优先的。D省略those, 在GMAC中间做正确答案的情况几乎没有。-- 除非特殊情况，用those，that都不能指代等。下面的这两道题是我发现的GMAC+大全中唯多不多的例子)

Only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the movies—less than those killed by bee stings.
A. movies—less than those
B. movies—fewer than have been
C. movies, which is less than those
D. movies, a number lower than the people
E. movies, fewer than the ones
这里选B,原因是those不能指代前面的seven people.

还有一到886上的题：
440. In one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, fought at Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, four times as many Americans were killed as would later be killed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day.
(A) Americans were killed as
(B) Americans were killed than
(C) Americans were killed than those who
(D) more Americans were killed as there
(E) more Americans were killed as those who
在没有其他选项的情况下选A，没有补出those。

请大家指正！

补充一下，你说的歧义是不存在的。 those charging over。。这里只有一种理解。这里D与E比较，主要的问题还是不完整吧。

前一部分括号中是一个句子，主语是independent institutions of higher education，谓语是charge ，宾语是tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year，这是标准的主谓宾结构
而第2个括号中只是一个those只有一个名词后面跟着现在分词修饰
第一个括号的句子和第2个括号的一个词比较这样合适吗？
相反如果是D，就是句子和句子的比较
as many（ independent institutions of higher education charge tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year ）as （those ）charge over $16,000，省略了those

把原来的句子理解成两个句子的比较不错，但是这样就不能省略those。因为省略those使得比较成分不清楚。相对来说E是就清楚了。至少对于比较的对象而言。
句子意思的清楚和完整是最重要的，其次才是形式。如果D补出了those我认为可以选。如果没有，我认为不行。至少造成了意思的含混。

在没有其他选项的情况下选A，没有补出those。

那根据4L举例的例子
as many （Americans were killed） as （would later be killed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day)也省略了those，也会造成比较不清

是的。这个问题我也纠结了很久。我现在的想法是：对于比较题来说，
比较形式的正确大于比较对象大于比较主语的动词/助动词补出

上面的这个例子恰好说明了比较形式大于比较对象（more多余）
一句话：不能省略不该省略的部分。比较要尽量清晰的去比较两个事物。

这题选E的话主句就没有主语了阿选d 好

Prep exam pack 1里官方答案是D。本人觉得正确答案应该用 those charge，否则只补出动词感觉很怪。
GMAT SC真是无聊，prep exam pack里竟是这些有争议偏激的题目，大家不要买啊
