5．advocate sth/advocate sb doing sth/advocate that 后面用虚拟should省略
选项B：改变句子意思，to him 可以理解为修饰freedom，则句子意思变为：非洲象征着对他的自由的可能性。原句说非洲对他而言意味着自由。
选项C：which was the land 这种表达是unidiomatic的，
      to him 修饰改变句意
选项D：which was the land表达unidiomatic
      to him作为一种插入语，逗号不能省略，这里的to him不知道做什么成分（这个不确定）
选项E：advocate 用法错
      to him 修饰改变原句意思错
      Africa莫名其妙

我选择B，虽然觉得symbolizing修饰land不是很合适，但是DE显然错，C中which was the land which从语法上来讲有问题，但还是选了B，因为觉得A中the land that作同位语固然很好，但是to him提前显的句子读起来不太舒服。

但是看了dreadpower得解释之后，我觉得很有道理，主要在于对句子意思的理解。

原意是说对他而言，这意味着自由的可能性，（应该是blacks的自由）

而BC的说法是说这意味着对他的自由的可能性，这和A还是有挺大差异的。

不知道这样理解对不对？

不知道这一题可否这样来理解。B的错误在于，动名词在这里不仅仅是一种省略的形式，同时还表示着和前面的动作的同步进行。而这里，很明显symbolize和return不是同步进行的，所以b答案没有a答案好。

请指教
