Issue 120 Claim: The surest indicator of a great nation must be the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists. Reason: Great achievements by a nation's rulers, artists, or scientists will ensure a good life for the majority of that nation's people. Writea response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Many successful great people make contribution to the well-being of the citizens, therefore, their achievements can serve as a good indicator as a strong nation; 2. Geniuses cannot portray a full picture---the elite only 3. Achievements may not all target at boosting the well-being of people’s lives
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What reflects a strong nation? Many things may serve as an indicator for a strong nation, like strong military power, good economics, high technologies, advanced civilizations and so forth. This issue considering that the achievement great people of a nation--the rulers, artists, or scientists--as a good indicator for its strength due to the boosting effect of these achievements to the good life of the people is valuable and sometimes may hold true, but I suppose in a broad sphere the successes of these great people may not be a good indicator.
The well-being of the people within a nation is definitely a good indicator for a strong nation. After all, the fundamental purpose of building a nation is to guarantee a good life for the citizens, and therefore a nation can never be called great if its people are suffering from poor famine and poverty. From this point, if the achievements of the great people can bring benefits to the people’s life, make a better living condition for them, then these achievements are for sure a mirror to a strong nation. For example, each revolution of technologies driven by scientists and inventers bring great change to our society: creating more power for production like DNA-transmission tech for productive farming, enriching the living content like Apple tech today. The rulers boost the nations with laws and policies, and the artists enrich people’s mental world by charming music and painting colors. Their achievements are definitely the symbol of a strong nation.
Although the successes created by these geniuses are great and valuable to the society, however, we cannot overweigh their successes so much as to believe only their successes and contributions can mirror whether a nation is strong or not. After all, the elite are just a tiny part of the whole society with a limited contribution to the glory of the whole society. Sometimes, their efforts may be too tiny to shift the nation’s fate of declining, like the work of those scholars with advanced knowledge in Old China. It is likely to witness some nations can be strong with few achievements from the great geniuses; also to view some nations become declined in spite of many great and talented achievements from the elite. In a word, the achievements of the elite may not always guarantee a nation strong.
Moreover, there is no guarantee that all the achievements from the great people are made to improve the well-being of the people in the nation. Some achievements may even act negatively. Sometimes we may detect some negative application of the creation by scientists or artists for an evil purpose. The nuclear weapon, for example, developed as a discovery of the nuclear physics brings a painful lesson to all human beings. Scientists like Einstein even regret to invent it. If the achievements fail to bring benefits but pains to our society, how can we say that they are a good indicator for a strong nation?
In sum, the achievements of the great people—the rulers, artists, or scientists—may be able to serve as a good indicator to a strong nation when they bring benefits to the well-being of the citizens. However, we should also view that the effort and successes done by the great cannot definitely guarantee a nation strong, and the achievements themselves may be not beneficial to our society at all, therefore requiring another indicator—the characters of the populace may be a better one.
