Issue 49. Claim: We can usually learn much more frompeople whose views we share than from those whose views contradict our own. Reason: Disagreement can cause stress andinhibit learning. Write a response in which you discuss theextent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on whichthat claim is based. 1. What kind of people can we learn more from? Those who share ideas with us, or hold opposite opinions to us? The speaker ofthis issue avers that it is people whose views we share may who we can learnmuch more than those of opposite ideas. The reason of his point is thatdisagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning. I concede his pointsometimes may hold true and the reason can sustain in some situations, but itdoes not portray a full picture about the best learning, therefore, requiring acase-by-case analysis. Communication and developing understandingbetween people are considered to be essential for studying process. Sometimes, when people disagree with each other, they may fail to communicate with eachother due to the stress from disagreement. Humans can be mean sometimes, andthe stress from a disagreement may be somehow converted into anger, pressure, disorder or even fear. There negative emotions will definitely block thecommunication and inhibit people to develop a good knowledge about each other'spoint. On the contrary, we may feel pleasure when meeting someone sharing thesame tastes and ideas, and therefore, tend to approach them and talk to them,in order to develop a full understanding of each other. From this point, theclaim and reason held by the speaker turn to be true. On the other hands, not all disagreementwill lead to a stress. After all, different ideas do not mean to be aggressiveor exclusive. When we can easily communicate with people with different ideas,we may find we can learn more from them instead of those with the same ideaswith us. Given a single issue, people may think about it in different angles. The experience to communicate with someone who bear a different idea from yourwill open a door for you to view the same issue from another angle, thereforestrengthen your understanding on this issue. That is reason for setting updiscussion and debate. Moreover, we have to view that not allpeople will develop a negative reaction due to the stress from the argumentwith the people of different ideas. Sometimes, a little stress can make us more focus on the opponents'ideas, and therefore enhance the understanding of their point. In a debateforum, for example, the stress from the competition and the dichotomy instandings will drive the debaters to be more focusing on the opponents' ideasand performance, therefore, making them develop a good understanding abouttheir rivals for a good defense. Also, stress may also trigger excitement and contribute to a high pace of our mind, which will somehow help us learn from the others. In sum, it is true that the possible stressfrom a disagreement may lead to some negative effect on the learning processfrom other people, therefore, making the people holding the same ideas besttarget to learn from. While, there are also other situations in which thedisagreement may not lead to a stress or the stress fail to develop some sortof negative emotions. In such situations, we may feel we can learn more fromthe people with a different idea, since they may consider problems in newaspects and further develop your understanding on the issue. The best way tolearn is to be tolerate about different ideas and learn from them with ease. (564—40min) |
