GWD-27-Q7 Providing initial evidence that airports are a larger source of pollution than they were once believed to be, environmentalists in Chicago report that the total amount of pullutant emitted annually by vehicles at O'Hare International Airport is twice that emitted annually by all motor vehicles in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Prep08题后的解释说twice后可以直接加名词，这与Prep08-181题后的解释补充的曼哈顿解释矛盾吗？——曼哈顿解释：twice后如果不是表示数的词，就要用as many/much as，如 twice the water 就是不对的。那请问上面那道题里的twice that中that指代的是什么？是前面的the amount吗？如果是twice the pollutant，那么究竟对还是不对？同时请教一下，这种the amount of+名词或者percent of+名词的结构，核心词是数还是后面的名词，代词一般指代哪一个？这个疑惑主要表现在这道题中：

A.原句
D.twice as much as those reported in the 1977 survey
E.twice the number reported in the 1977 survey
答案给的是E，可以理解。但不明白为何 A项的错误在哪，是不是因为those指代不明。另外，C项中如果much改成many，即变成 twice as many as those reported in the 1977survey，这样对吗？这里就涉及到了上文提到的twice或者double后面所跟的词究竟是指代percent/amount，还是代指后面的核心名词？

望高手给予解答！谢谢！小弟在比较结构和倍数表达方面尤其犯晕，还请高手指点！

twice和double加名词的话加的是an explicity numerical quantity eg. increase 所以可以说twice the increase。twice the amount是正确的。twice the pollutant 与 twice the water一样都是错误的，因为两个都是不可数名词，应该是twice as much water/pollutant.

A错在those 指代错误，要是指代20% of young adults/ young adults，那么我们把young adults直接替代those的话语句就变成了doubling the adults reported in the 1977 survey，而在上一段中说到，double 与 twice 后面是加an explicity numerical quantity ，不加一般的名词。
我觉得把much 改成many是正确的，不知道合不合理，要是不对的话还请更正我一下。
E的twice the number就正确了关键在于twice/double后面加的名词。

真心感谢啊！！！一下问得太多，字太密了不好意思~
还有想请教一下，像以上两个例题中都出现了amount of pollutant和percent of adults的结构，请问这里我们强调的是amount/percent还是他们后面的名词？答案的选项好像都是在强调amount和percent，第一题that代指amount，第二题也用number强调了20%，是不是这种结构里面twice或者double后面都是强调数字+of+名词结构里的数，而不是里面的名词？

是强调amount和percfent而非名词，比较的是这些名词的数量而不是单单这些名词本身，还是那句话 twice/double 后面跟的是explicity numerical quantity!我们比较的就是那个quantity
