句子主干：More than 2,000 letters and documents are yielding a historical account. 争论就是that从句是否修饰对象究竟是谁。理论上，GMAT中修饰部分应该紧靠修饰对象，定语从句有的时候可以通过单复数来实现跨越式修饰，比如：He is the only one of the seven students who has ever been to the United States. 后面的从句显然是跨过了students修饰前面的单数only one，但是能紧跟的时候应该紧跟。 所以，这道题account是可以被gathered修饰的，因此that从句应该是修饰最近的account，全部是单数修饰，因此选d. 如果要修饰复数主语，应该插入语到主语后面直接修饰，比如More than 2,000 letters and documents, as vivid in their detals..., are yielding a historical account...这样比较符合GMAT语法习惯。 Hope it helps ~~~ -- by 会员 MollyDong (2010/5/2 9:06:39)

逗号后的that所修饰的成分很疑惑。查了CD前辈很多关于这方面内容的帖子，真可是众说纷纭啊。
最后的归纳总结是：如果语法和逻辑不可以判断的话，就得用其他方法来判断。
比如：
164. Thecommission proposed that funding for the park's development, which could beopen to the public early next year, is obtained through a local bond issue.
(B)that funding for development of the park, which could be open tothe public early next year, be
(E)developmentfunding for thepark, which couldbe open to the public early next year, is to be
Choice B is best.Choice A attaches the relative clause which could be open ... to thenoun development, when, in fact, it is the park that could beopen. Choice C omits that, the object of proposed that is neededto introduce the clause describing the proposal. C also uses to beunidiomatically where be is correct: the commission proposed [that] funding... to be obtained is wrong. Choice D incorrectly uses perhaps open tothe public ... to modify development; the phrase should modify park.Choice E, which seriously distorts meaning,says that the commission proposed development funding and that suchfunding could be open to the public ....
e是主谓宾结构，which优先修饰宾语
当然，主+谓+宾，that结构和插入语或同位语中出现的that，又是另外一种需要区分的情况了。
