其实这里和2楼的看法不冲突，比较的是civilization和civilizations，复数的civilizations其实相当于those，但是，由于前面没有出现过复数的civilizations，所以直接用一个复数名词替代。正如我们平时看到的that/those，他们都可以用实义名词替代，而不必用代词，用代词，要么是为了防止语言的单调，要们就是有语法或逻辑的需要。
